Blavatsky
Original sense
Maya is the illusion of regarding the phenomenal, differentiated universe as the ultimate real. It is not that the world is a fake or a video game; it is that we mistake names, forms, and the personal self for the thing-in-itself. Even gods, in her system, are within Maya relative to the unmanifest.
Maya is the cause of the hallucination by which we see that which is not, and fail to see that which is.
She used the Advaita insight without collapsing into a lazy ‘nothing matters.’ Ethics, karma, and compassion remain binding inside Maya. That is the whole point of a path.
