Blavatsky
Original sense
A chela is a probationary pupil of a living Master, accepted only after moral tests that may span years and lives. Chelaship is dangerous: it intensifies karma, exposes hidden faults, and is not a correspondence course. She published severe essays on failed chelas.
Chelaship is a living and breathing thing… it is not a diploma that can be bought or a title that can be assumed.
‘Lay chelas’ were people who tried to live the discipline without formal acceptance. The Voice of the Silence is framed as instruction for the lanoo, the disciple on the inner path.
